More about the Paiva river ...
The Rio Paiva is one of the few rivers in the world where one can find species like the river mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) (right) which was once considered extinct in the world. The NGO SOS Rio Paiva has found traces of several colonies of this species in Rio Paiva which reinforces the importance of this river in Natura 2000. Other species like Cerambyx cerdo, Lucanus cervus, Oxygastra curtisii, Canis lupus, Lutra lutra, Lacerta Schreiberi, Chioglossa lusitanica, etc. can be found in Paiva's valley. TIn 2010 the NGO also detected the presence of an osprey resting in the river before continuinh its journey to Africa.
