About the energy sector and Natura 2000

An overview of how the Natura 2000 network relates to the energy sector

Many devices that generate renewable energy depend on wind or water and are therefore located in coastal areas, often near Natura 2000 sites. This is problematic, as an offshore wind-farm may not only interfere with shipping but may also affect fish species due to the underwater diffusion of vibrations. A tidal turbine might affect fish populations because of its underwater noise or lubricant leak. The same applies to other water-based technologies.

This creates a conflict between two cognate desirables, climate-friendly energy and the protection of local nature. Achieving both objectives, requires intelligent project planning based on stakeholder cooperation and best practice exchange.
