Successful hiking event in the Rio Paiva Natura 2000 site
Over one hundred people walk along the river Paiva Natura 2000 site in the north of Portugal, as part of the "Forest for All" initiative
On 26th of March, over 100 people took part in a walk as part of the "Forest for All" initiative, promoted by the Forestry Association of Vale do Sousa in partnership with the SOS Rio Paiva ONG with support from the local Council.
The walk, about 14 kms, was along the margins of the River Paiva in Castelo de Paiva, classified as a Site of Community Importance in Natura 2000, and home to several species of rare plants and animals. The initiative also served to mark the International Year of Forests (2011).
The walkers, accompanied by several rescuers of the Red Cross of Castelo de Paiva and volunteer firefighters who collaborated in the initiative, walked the banks of the river (the least polluted in Europe), visiting well-preserved forests where there are still many arbutus, laurel, chestnut and oak trees that have escaped the 'colonization' of uncontrolled eucalyptus.
The walk also included the mills of Melo and some natural river beaches. Around fifty students of the School EB 2,3-Castelo de Paiva took part, accompanied by their teachers who were all introduced to the most important natural wonders of the county and the importance of Natura 2000.
A round-winged eagle made an appearance to greet the participants in this initiative.
The event is an example of encouraging public interest in wildlife, nature and Natura 2000.
